With Christmas less than a couple of weeks away, what better way to get in the festive spirit than take a cold and Christmassy trip to the capital of Poland. Poland are known for doing Christmas well and I can see why after visiting at such festive time of year. If you are looking for somewhere cold, yet full of Christmas food, lights and cheer then this is a must visit during the festive period!

Come and explore Poland, Warsaw at Christmas time with me . . .

Flying to Warsaw . . .

Warsaw has two airports which you are able to fly into, the airports vary in distance from the city, flight availability and prices:

Warsaw Airport - This is the main airport of the two and also the closest to the city centre. With a wider variety of flight destinations, this is the airport you would use for long-haul flights. It also accommodates a wide variety of airlines, giving you more choice for flight destinations.

Modlin Airport - This airport is a Ryanair airport only. Which means that the flights are short haul only. Due to being the cities second airport it is the smaller of the two, therefore accommodates the budget airline. This is the airport which you are most likely to get flights to from London Stansted.

Getting to the city . . .

Due to Warsaw having two airports getting to the city can vary depending on which airport you have arrived at. The Warsaw airport is closest to the city, however due to Modlin airport accommodating budget airline arrivals, if you are flying from London, you are most likely to fly into the further airport within Warsaw.

From Warsaw Airport:

  • Bus - You are able to get the number 175 bus to the centre of the city and around the old town from the airport. If you need a bus to the other side of the river use number 148 or 188 and if you need a bus at night use number N32.

  • Train - There is a train station located within the airport where you can get a direct train to the central station in Warsaw. This is approximately a 25 minute journey. You will need to use line S3 which runs every 15 minutes. You ca purchase a single fare ticket for your journey which will cost you 4.40 Zloty.

  • Hire car - Car rentals are available from the arrival hall at terminal A, where multiple companies have cars available. You are able to check prices and pre-book online for a better deal.

  • Taxi - Taxis are available outside of the terminal at the taxi stop where you can get a taxi from approved companies. This journey will cost you approximately 30-40 Zloty depending on the time of day.

From Modlin Airport:
  • Bus - From the airport you are able to get a variety of buses. Whether you want to get the bus to the train station where you can continue your journey into the city or if you want to get just the bus the whole way into the city. The bus to the train station is just outside the door where you exit the airport. This is a normal looking bus where you buy a ticket on board. This 10 minute journey will cost you 20 Zloty including your train ticket. The other bus which takes you into the city is just across the road from the airport exit. You would however purchase your ticket for this inside the airport, next to the door where you exit. Priced at 35 Zloty for single journey of approximately 45 minutes with no traffic and 1 hour during rush hour traffic. This bus can be pre-booked which will ensure you get the bus time you wish as this is a busy service. However it is simple and easy to purchase a ticket on the day as we found out.

  • Train - Unfortunately there is not a train station at the Modlin airport. You are however able to get a bus to the train station where you can continue your journey into the city by train. You can find out about the bus service above. Once at the train station you can get a direct train into the centre which will take you 43 minutes. This service is only once an hour so you may have to wait for the train. Tickets for the bus and train can be purchases at the airport for 20 Zloty for the bus and train.

  • Hire car - Hiring a car for the city can be done quick and easy at the airport where you will find a variety of hire services. Pre-booking is however advised to ensure you get the car you want for the price you want.

  • Taxi - A taxi from the airport to the city will cost you approximately 200 Zloty. This can of cause vary depending on the time of the journey and how many people you need the taxi for.

Christmas in the city . . .

Poland is a country which is known for doing Christmas well. Therefore with Christmas less than a couple of weeks away what better way to get in the festive spirit than visiting the capital, Warsaw. Warsaw at Christmas time is filled with lots of pretty lights and decorations, festive food, music and quirky presents to buy. Although it can be rather cold and snowy the festive spirit will cheery you up.

Christmas Market: The main Christmas market in the city is located by the Royal Castle in the Old Town. Here you will find a giant Christmas tree and the entrance to the market which is filled with food and gifts to buy. The market is just one hut wide, leading down a path, if you follow it to the end you will be able to make your way to the 'Rynek Starego Miasta' square where there are more food stalls and the outside ice skating rink.
This is the entrance above to the Christmas Markets!

Christmas mission of finding the biggest tree!

Where do you like to visit during Christmas time?
